Golddiamond Looks to Remain Undefeated

The opening leg of the Trophée des Éleveurs for 3-year-old pacers will take place this Sunday, July 19, at Hippodrome Trois-Rivières, marking the beginning of the road to this fall’s major celebration of Quebec breeding. Two divisions for each sex are on the program.

The second division for colts is the one attracting the most attention. Golddiamond, a first-year competitor by Cattlewash, has already won all five of his career starts. Last week, he established a lifetime mark of 1:56.2 with Stéphane Brosseau in the sulky.

Golddiamond will leave from post five as the morning-line favorite after turning heads in recent starts, particularly with final quarters in 28.4 seconds. His most serious rival, however, will start immediately to his inside. Last year’s Coupe de l’Avenir champion Bernard has been unable to show his best in recent outings against much older rivals, but he should be a major factor this week. William Roy will drive the colt who bears his grandfather’s first name.

In the other division for colts, Night Off and Francis Picard have been given the nod by the track handicapper over Wicked Buddy Buck, who returns to Trois-Rivières following a stint at Georgian Downs. In his first start of the season over the Trois-Rivières oval, Wicked Buddy Buck impressed with a winning performance in 2:00.

Among the fillies, Guy Gagnon trainee Cattlekiss is by far the fastest, with a lifetime mark of 1:51.2 established at Woodbine Mohawk Park last year. She is still seeking her first victory of the season, but that drought could soon come to an end. Marie-Claude Auger will be in the sulky, and Cattlekiss will benefit from the inside post. Taylor Desbi, who was part of the spectacular three-way dead heat 10 days ago, will be among her challengers.

In Sunday afternoon’s third race, Kenogami Delight has steadily improved since making her career debut. The daughter of Bettors Delight won in 1:59 earlier this summer at Trois-Rivières. Chezmatante Du Lac and Pierre-Luc Roy will also be worth watching.

An 11-race program filled with speed, emotion and excitement will be presented Sunday, with first post at noon.
