Over $900,000 in purses are on the table Monday (July 14) at Oak Grove Racing, Gaming & Hotel as the southern Kentucky track hosts an octet of $100,000 Kentucky Sire Stakes finals for 2- and 3-year-olds.
In the 2-year-old filly trot, carded as the sixth of 13 races on the program, TheStable.ca, P23 Bloodstock and Hutchison Harness’s Jailbird Jog looks to complete a series sweep after winning her preliminary events in 1:56.3 and 1:55.4. The daughter of Tactical Landing-Miss Don Fanucci S has been installed as the 6-5 favorite in the field of eight, and Anthony MacDonald will drive her from post 5 for trainer Eric Patalan. Flanking her on the starting gate will be Next Generation winner Setyoursightshigh (driven by Dexter Dunn, 7-2 morning line, post 4) and second-round winner Victorianas Secret (Scott Zeron, 5-1, post 6).
Clarissa W likewise seeks a series sweep in the 3-year-old filly trot, carded as Race 8. The daughter of Googoo Gaagaa-Yen drew the pole in her eight-horse field after preliminary wins in 1:53.2 and 1:55.1, and is the 5-2 morning-line choice with Todd McCarthy aboard for trainer Julie Walker, who shares ownership with Erinwood Equine and Nancy Holmes. Among her seven rivals are Admiring (David Miller, 4-1, post 4), who won her second-round split in 1:54.3; Spicy Nice (Andy McCarthy, 5-1, post 6), a 1:54.2 winner in the first round; and Ms Prada (Yannick Gingras, 7-2, post 8), whose 1:53.1 first-round win is the fastest of any filly in this series.
The 2-year-old male pace final, carded as Race 9, shapes as a showdown between two-time winners Clouseau (Dexter Dunn, 5-2, post 6) and Funky Buddha (Todd McCarthy, 7-2, post 4), and What Nooo Waaay (Yannick Gingras), who has been installed the 2-1 early choice from post 2 after going off at odds-on in both starts to date — the first resulting in a 1:53.3 win and the second a game third-place finish behind Funky Buddha’s 1:52.4 win on July 7.
Caviart Daisy will be the fourth horse to seek a series sweep, leading the 2-year-old filly pace (Race 11) from the pole as the 7-5 early choice. Andy McCarthy drove the Jamie Sullivan-trained daughter of Sweet Lou-Caviart Darlin’ to 1:54.4 and 1:54 preliminary wins for owner Frank Chick, and will once again handle the driving assignment in the final. Caviart Daisy’s biggest competition comes from Ron Burke trainee Barbuda Belle, who has been installed the 5-2 second choice with Yannick Gingras driving from post 8 after a three-length, 1:53.4 win in her second-round split.
The morning-line favorites in the four remaining Kentucky Sire Stakes finals are as follows: Big Shoes (Gingras, 5-2) in the 3-year-old male trot, carded as Race 4; three-time Ohio Sires Stakes winner Odds On Chesapeake (Dunn, 6-5) in the 3-year-old filly pace, Race 10; Harrisburg Heist (Gingras, 2-1) in the 3-year-old male pace, Race 12; and Endurance (Andy McCarthy, 5-2) in 2-year-old male trot, Race 13.
Four $25,000 consolations and a United States Harness Driving Club event comprise the undercard.
