Vernon Downs set to open 2022 meet

Vernon Downs is set to begin their 69th year of harness racing on Saturday (April 16), with an 11-race card slated to start at 6:05 p.m.

Highlights for the season include “Derby Day” featuring the live showing of the Kentucky Derby on May 7 with a special post time of 5:05 p.m. On July 2, live racing will be followed by fireworks.

Vernon Downs will feature the Empire Breeders Classic for 3-year-old trotters, with separate races for fillies and colts, on June 17 with a special post time of 12:15 p.m. The track will also again host the Zweig Memorial races, featuring open and filly divisions for sophomore trotters, on July 9 with a post time of 12:15 p.m.

Leon Bailey seeks to defend his crown as the top driver at Vernon after winning the track’s last two driving titles, while Jeff Sorenson ended 2021 atop the training standings. Justin Huckabone is another top contender, having finished as the runner-up in both the driving and trianing standings last year.
