The Quebec-Bred Series continues Sunday at Hippodrome Trois-Rivières as 4-year-old pacing mares, colts and geldings return for the second preliminary leg of the series.
The pacing mares have been divided into two divisions.
Godiva Shadow Girl will be looking for her second consecutive victory as she leaves from post seven with William Roy in the sulky. In the opening preliminary leg, the daughter of Shadow Play dominated the field from start to finish, stopping the clock in 1:57.3. It was an impressive effort in just her second start after three years away from the races. Her toughest challenger, Kiss Me Bad, will have the advantage of the rail position as she seeks revenge after finishing second behind Godiva Shadow Girl in their most recent meeting. Driven this week by Steeven Gagnon, Kiss Me Bad is the richest mare in the field with career earnings of $135,347.
In the other division, Silver Majesty earned the handicapper’s confidence following her June 7 victory in 1:58 over a sloppy track. She will start from post three for Denis St-Pierre. Trained by Jean-François Maguire, she recorded her lifetime-best performance earlier this season with a 1:53.3 victory at Woodbine Mohawk Park. Although she crossed the wire with a comfortable advantage in her last start, she will have to contend with Whitemountaincammy, who could provide stiff opposition from post two. Last week, Whitemountaincammy delivered a strong effort, pacing her final quarter in :29.3. She will be seeking her first victory of the season.
Among the male pacers, Bets Beach, unbeaten in four starts, will once again face longtime rival Kingston Panic. However, a newcomer to the series this week could turn the matchup into a three-way battle. Boomboom Tonight returns to competition after missing all of last season. The son of Sportswriter, racing for the Elisabeth Pothier stable, captured the Breeders Trophy as a three-year-old and showed he is ready to compete at a high level by winning a qualifying race in 1:59.1 on June 13, including a final quarter in :29.4. Francis Picard will be in the sulky.
The third and final preliminary leg of the series will take place next Sunday ahead of the championship finals on July 5.
