Stakes winner Sammy Davis, ascending Tommy Norris and Thirsty Rebel lead a speed-laden field set for Saturday’s Echo Eddie Stakes presented by Daily Racing Form for California-breds going 6 ½ furlongs at Santa Anita.

Sammy Davis, winner of last year’s Graduation Stakes for statebreds at Del Mar, most recently tested turf for the first time against open company in a second-level allowance and finished second on the hillside turf course as the odds-on favorite. Trained by John Sadler, Sammy Davis previously finished second in the 1 1/16 mile California Cup Derby after leading the way on Jan. 16. Sent off the favorite that day, he was beaten by 1 ¾ lengths.

Owned by Legacy Ranch, the gelding by Sir Prancealot is 6: 2–3-0 with $193,700 in earnings. He will have the services of Santa Anita leading rider Emisael Jaramillo for the first time.

Tommy Norris enters the Echo Eddie fresh off two front running victories. On Feb 7, the Stanford gelding broke his maiden against statebreds by 4 ½ lengths when going six furlongs at Santa Anita. Earlier this month, Tommy Norris broke a step slow but quicky recovered to take the lead in a statebred allowance/optional claimer going six furlongs. He held off a fast-closing Fionello, who also returns in the Echo Eddie, to win by a half-length. Owned by Mia Familia Racing Stalbe and bred by Richard Barton, Tommy Norris is 9: 2-2-2 with $120,790 in earnings. He will have regular rider Edwin Maldonado aboard.

Thirsty Rebel is seeking a first stakes win for trainer Doug O’Neill. The colt by Stay Thirsty kicked off his sophomore campaign testing the GII San Vicente going seven furlong and checked in fourth behind winner So Happy who returns in Saturday’s Grade I Santa Anita Derby. Subsequently switched to turf for a statebred allowance, Thirsty Rebel went off favored and had the lead in the stretch before being caught late to finish third by 1 ¾ lengths. Owned by Mark D. Breen, Thirsty Rebel is 7: 2-1-1 with $126,000 in earnings. He’ll have regular rider Abel Lezcano aboard.
